How was Barley Gold™ originated?
Barley Gold™ was first formulated with Agriculture Canada to test barley feed with broiler chickens. Physiological results were so remarkable, that we believed people could also benefit greatly from this enhanced barley. What were the benefits of regular barley?
Barley has Biblically and historically been known as a nutrient rich food. Gladiators used it in preparing and building their bodies for matches. Eastern cultures used to sprout seeds to prevent scurvy before long ship voyages.

What are the benefits of sprouting?
Sprouting is as an effective way to increase vitamin content and digestibility.
Some people believe sprouts to be the most nutrient-rich food on Earth. Sprouted
grains have increased vitamin and nutrient content because the seed is first
sprouted, making it alive and active in its growth process.
Whole seeds have
not had nutrients stripped from the grain and then added back into the product
later on. BARLEYGOLDTM sprouting has been synchronized and stabilized before
grinding and therefore is a live food in the most unrefined stage possible.
Research shows that, in sprouts, one finds one of the foods highest vitamin
and mineral content. Sprouts should, therefore, occupy a prominent place in
the diet. There are very few commercial avenues for purchasing sprouted foods.
Most "raw
foods bars" are raw but not sprouted (and therefore do
not have active enzymes). The same is true of most nut and seed butters.
The
fact that sprouts have a limited shelf-life is unfortunate. However, BARLEYGOLDTM
sprouted organic whole food barley nutrients have been non-chemically stabilized
for up to two years. This product is easy to use and a fabulous addition
to your diet!
More and more people are discovering the benefits that can be received by
adding to the diet the condensed energy hidden within the seed and released
in the form of sprouts. The endosperm of the seed is the storehouse of carbohydrates,
protein, and oil.
When the seed germinates, these become predigested amino
acids and natural sugars upon which the plant embryo feeds as it grows to
maturity. When used as food, the life force is released and supplies the energy
which is capable of generating healthy cells in the body and supplying one
with new vigor and life.
Sprouting grains converts starches activitates hydrolytic enzymes, improves
the contents of total proteins, fat, certain essential amino acids, total sugars,
B-group vitamins, and naturally lowers dry matter and protective anti- nutrients
within the seed. These adjusted contents can only be attributable to the disappearance
of starch from the metabolic effects of the sprouting process.
The rich bioavailable digestible energy in vitamins, minerals, amino acids,
proteins, and phytochemicals, as these are necessary for a germinating seed
to grow and mature. These nutrients are also are essential for human health.
Nutritional changes of sprouting
Are mainly due to the breakdown of complex compounds into a more simple form and the transformation of protective mechanisms into desirable constituents.
Increased protein quality and quantity. The conversion of storage proteins of cereal grains into albumins and globulins during sprouting improve the quality of cereal proteins.
Increase in the content of the amino acid Lysine.
Increased inproteolytic activity improving hydrolysis of prolamins and the liberating of amino acids such as glutamic and proline to amino acids such as lysine.
Decrease of crude fiber the major constituent of cell walls, with the synthesis of structural carbohydrates, such as cellulose and hemicellulose.
Increases in essential fatty acids. The increase in lipase activity has been reported in barley by MacLeod and White (1962), as cited by Chavan and Kadam (1989). Increased lipolytic activity during germination and sprouting causes hydrolysis of triacylglycerols to glycerol and constituent fatty acids.
Increased vitamin content. Most reports agree that sprouting treatment of
cereal grains generally improves their vitamin value, especially the B-group
vitamins.Certain vitamins such as α-tocopherol (Vitamin-E) and β-carotene (Vitamin-A
precursor) are produced during the growth process. Sprouts provide a good supply
of Vitamins A, E & C plus B complex.
Like enzymes, vitamins serve as bioactive
catalysts to assist in the digestion and metabolism of grains and the release
of energy. They are also essential for the healing and repair of cells.
However,
vitamins are very perishable, and in general, the fresher the sprouted
grains eaten, the higher the vitamin content. The vitamin content of some seeds
can increase by up to 20 times their original value within several days of
sprouting. Compared with mature plants, sprouts can yield vitamin contents
30 times higher.
Minerals are chelated. When seeds are sprouted, minerals chelate or merge with protein, in a way that increases their function. The comparisons are of dormant, non-sprouted seed to sprouted seed.
Able, when used as an adjunct to the diet, to retard the aging process, since they contain ample amounts of male and female hormones, available in their most assimilate able form.
Also, when sprouted grains convert a portion of starch to simple sugars, making it a wholesome food acceptable to many who would otherwise need to eliminate gluten grains as a food source.
- Produces vitamin C but also changes the composition of grain and seeds in numerous beneficial ways.
- Increases the vitamin B content, especially B2, B5 and B6.
- Carotene increases dramatically – sometimes eightfold.
- Neutralizes phytic acid, a substance, present in the bran of all grains that inhibits absorption of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc; sprouting also neutralizes enzyme inhibitors present in all seeds. These inhibitors can neutralize our own precious enzymes in the digestive tract. (Gluten intolerances)
- Complex sugars responsible for intestinal gas are broken down during sprouting, and a portion of the starch in grain is transformed into sugar.
- Sprouting inactivates Alfa toxin, potent carcinogens found in grains.
- Numerous enzymes that help digestion are produced during the germination process.
- Germination (sprouting) increases the enzyme activity as much as six times.
What research has been done on the effectiveness of this product?
As mentioned, testing was done on broiler chickens. They make good test subjects as they do not respond to placebos and due to a relatively short life span for a completion of extensive batteries of tests.

Why do the Nutrition Facts say not much?
Another test is our Barley GoldTM Nutritional Comparison, which proved that Barley Gold’s digestibility of the nutritious seed was brought from 5% to 95%. This is a great tool, as the Nutrition Facts on the side of the jar do not have the capabilities to test the digestion to one’s body and all the enormous nutrition factored in with this digestion.

What does the Barley Gold™ look or taste like?
Barley Gold™ is in a flour-like, powdered form. It has the ability to take on the taste of whatever it is put into. In other words it can be easily camouflaged for children if put into yogurt, or even in between their peanut butter and jam sandwich.
Alone, it has a taste similar to nutty flour. The simplest means of intake is to take a spoonful and wash it down with water. You can put it in juice, your favourite smoothie, or nut-milk.
Stir it into your cereal or cooled porridge. You can be quite creative, but avoid putting the Barley Gold™ in anything that is over 35 degrees Celsius (105 degrees F). So do not microwave, cook or bake with Barley Gold™.

How do I store this product, what is the shelf life, and how much in a container?
If the Barley Gold™ is stored in a sealed container in your cupboard or on your counter, then that is usually good enough. If the climate is humid, it is best to keep it in the fridge, and definitely sealed.
Do not leave the Barley Gold™ in an overheated car, or in any heat above 35 degrees C. (105 degrees F.) Freezing the Barley Gold™ is fine, but will not postpone the life expectancy any further.
Life expectancy is a bit over 2 years, which is a remarkable shelf life that is due to our natural process called Nutrient Stabilization Process. The container will have a best before date. The containers hold approximately a one-month supply consumed daily at the highest suggested serving of 2 tablespoons per day.
Who can benefit from Barley Gold™ 1 or Barley Gold™ 2
Most everyone, from babies to seniors, can start and stay on Barley Gold™ 1. If one needs more protein in their diet, the Barley Gold™ 2 is recommended. The Barley Gold™ 2 should be consumed by active athletic persons (especially high performance athletes), “O” blood types, pre / diabetics, and even raw food vegans. Barley Gold™ 1 has 12% protein; whereas the Barley Gold™ 2 has 27% protein.

How much do I take?
- Start with 1/2 teaspoon for the first week.
- Increase by 1/2 teaspoon weekly until reaaaching 2 tablespoons.
- Maintenance requirements differ based on weight and athletic activities. Therefore gage your need based on hunger & fullness after consuming the Barley Gold.
- Athletes should up consumption leading up to completion or race - ask Distributor for more details.
- Barley GoldTM Alkalizing Flush requires you to be up to the 2 tablespoon mark before starting. During the Flush, it is advised to substitute meals with the Barley Gold, and only raw fruits, vege tables and juicing along with the Barley GoldTM for a minimum of 2 weeks.
- Celiacs, Gluten intolerant and very ill persons may want to start with ¼ of a teaspoon or less, depending on condition. Double weekly till up to the 2 tablespoon mark.
